RAMI AV-534 is a heavy-duty quarter-wave VHF COM antenna for 118–137 MHz. It has a stainless steel whip with a large stress-relieved ferrule and comes with porcelain insulators and mounting hardware. The antenna is 18.75 in (476 mm) high and weighs 8 oz (227 g).
It is vertically polarized with an omnidirectional pattern, 50 Ω nominal impedance, VSWR of 3.0:1 maximum and 50 W RF power capacity. The FAA has authorized the AV-534 to TSO-C37d and TSO-C38d. The AV-534 has no coaxial connector: the coax is soldered to two supplied lugs for the shield and the centre conductor. The AV-534L version comes with an 8 ft (2.4 m) coax cable with the lugs and a BNC connector already fitted.
The antenna rod passes through a single 17/32 in (13.5 mm) hole in the skin and is secured with hex nuts. The coax is not included. RAMI specifies at least 2 ft (0.6 m) from other antennas and reflective surfaces; on composite or wood aircraft, a ground plane of two crossed 48 in (1.2 m) copper wires is made inside the skin and connected to the shield lug. Installation in a certified aircraft needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service. Fit depends on the aircraft type and the COM radio model.
