Sky-Tec 122-NL is a 12 V NL-series starter for Lycoming engines with a 122-tooth ring gear (10/12 pitch), weighing about 4.2 kg (9.3 lb). Hartzell Engine Tech, which builds Sky-Tec starters today, holds an FAA PMA for the 122-NL as a replacement for original Lycoming starters on O-235, O-290, O-320, O-340, O-360, O-540 and IO-720 series engines, including the injected, aerobatic, helicopter and turbocharged models listed in the PMA supplement.
Like all Sky-Tec Lycoming starters, the 122-NL is solenoid-actuated and has the self-resetting Sky-Tec Kickback Protection System (KPS). Ring gear tooth count and voltage are part of the model number: the 149-NL fits 149-tooth ring gears, and the 122-NL/EC is the 24 V version. Sky-Tec requires the installer to confirm the ring gear tooth count on the engine.
An FAA PMA is a US approval: for an aircraft registered in an EASA state, the maintenance organisation confirms that the part is acceptable for the aircraft before installation and issues the Certificate of Release to Service (CRS). Fit depends on the engine model and the ring gear tooth count. An order needs the information on whether the old starter is returned as a core.
